Census and Sensibility: Making Your Residents Count in 2010

Wednesday, July 15, 2009
5:00pm – 7:00pm

Higher Education Tower, 111 East Las Olas Boulevard, 11th Floor
Board of Trustees Room

With hundreds of billions of dollars at stake, accurate market information is more critical now than ever.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the decennial count directly impacts the yearly allocation of more than $200 billion in federal funding to states, cities, and municipalities.  Further, retailers, financial institutions and other private sector investors rely on census data to inform investment decisions.  These investments are critical to the sustainability of redevelopment areas.  In cases where census estimates are inaccurate, cities and CRAs may not receive their fair share of funding, may be overlooked by investors, and may be misrepresented as stagnating or declining.  Attend and find out how to break down these barriers and identify your district’s real market potential.  Hear about how other communities have attracted investment in traditionally underserved and underrepresented neighborhoods.  And, learn how to make sense of the census, submit a successfully Census Challenge, and make sure your residents count.

Featured Guest Speaker: John Talmage, President, Social Compact

Social Compact is a non-profit organization breaking down barriers to private investment in inner-city neighborhoods.  By applying its cutting-edge methodology across available economic data for underserved communities, Social Compact uncovers overlooked economic indicators and provides detailed analyses that translate into new tools to support community development.

CRAs in the Region Meet in Cape Coral

CRAs from Naples, Punta Gorda, Immokalee, Williston, Fort Myers, Charlotte County, Riviera Beach and Collier County came together on Friday, June 5th at the Cape Coral CRA offices to discuss common issues SW Florida CRAs.

Participants also included private sector developers, architects and businesspersons, as well as local government officials.

The morning meeting of intense discussions ended with a trolley tour of the Cape Coral Redevelopment Area as well as the proposed expansion areas.

Among the “hot topics” discussed were parking, storm water management, regulating noise from entertainment venues in mixed-use development, façade and project assistance grants, outreach programs, and the importance of keeping redevelopment plans and vision plans up-to-date.

“The Cape Coral CRA hosted a very productive interchange of ideas on best practices,” said Don Paight, Fort Myers CRA Director, “ and we all had the chance not only to learn from each other, but to see first hand the extensive array of activities being undertaken by the Cape Coral CRA.”

John Jacobsen, Cape Coral CRA Director and organizer of the meeting, felt that getting the CRAs together on a regular basis is a good idea.  “Working with the Florida Redevelopment Association, we hope to establish regular quarterly meetings where experience gained can be shared,” Jacobsen stated. “Each CRA has unique issues, but there are also many common problems and opportunities,” he remarked.

Mayor Jim Burch, Council Liaison to the CRA stated that  “We were proud to share what we have learned, and our CRA staff and Board certainly did get ideas and contacts for follow up based upon our discussions.  If we are to work smarter, work more efficiently and effectively, we must learn from others and share what we have learned.  This will not only benefit the CRA and all of Cape Coral, but also all other CRAs in the region.”

The next CRA Board meeting will be Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the CRA Offices, 1231 Cape Coral Parkway East, at 5:30 PM.
